An examination here is not necessarily a written test. The Chairperson or designee administers examinations for appointment in the competitive division of the career service, and any one or more of eight things can count: written tests, oral tests, performance tests, physical performance tests, an evaluation of education, training or experience, computer-based tests, assessment exercises, and other appropriate measures of knowledge, skills and abilities. Subject matter specialists may be brought in as special examiners. State or local employees can do that work as part of their official duties during normal working hours with their appointing authority approving, and extra compensation may be provided for the same service outside those hours. Accommodation and waiver for candidates with disabilities is handled separately at 4A:4-2.14.

(a) The Chairperson or designee shall administer examinations for appointment in the competitive division of the career service, which may include any one or more of the following: #

1. Written tests; #

2. Oral tests; #

3. Performance tests; #

4. Physical performance tests; #

5. Evaluation of education, training or experience; #

6. Computer-based tests; #

7. Assessment exercises; and #

8. Other appropriate measures of knowledge, skills, and abilities. #

(b) The Chairperson or designee may select special examiners to act as subject matter specialists or to provide other assistance. Employees of the State or local jurisdictions may be so engaged as part of their official duties during normal working hours with the approval of their appointing authority. Extra compensation may be provided by the Chairperson or designee for such service outside normal working hours. #
