The New Jersey State Park Police are sworn law enforcement officers who patrol the state's parks, forests, and historic sites. Unlike the State Police, this is a competitive Civil Service title, which means it is filled through the Law Enforcement Examination and an eligible list, not a separate agency-run process.

Before you buy a police exam book, read this. New Jersey does not give the traditional municipal police test that most mainstream police exam guides were written for. It gives the Law Enforcement Examination, which is built on the Law Enforcement Aptitude Battery. The LEAB tests cognitive ability, not memorized police procedure.
Two of its three parts, the Work Styles Questionnaire and the Life Experience Survey, cannot be studied from a book. They are not knowledge tests, and no guide will change your score on them. Only the Ability Test rewards preparation.
What the job is
State Park Police Officers are full law enforcement officers within the Department of Environmental Protection. They carry, they have arrest authority, and they are in the PFRS pension system. The work combines conventional policing with resource protection across New Jersey's state parks and public lands, so it draws candidates who want law enforcement work in an outdoor setting rather than a municipal one.
How you get in
Entry is through the competitive Law Enforcement Examination, which is built on the LEAB cognitive aptitude battery. It is not a memorization test of park regulations or police procedure. Residency and veterans preference apply as they do across Civil Service law enforcement, and a passing score places you on an eligible list rather than directly into a job.
Residency, preference, and the eligible list
Because this is a Civil Service title, the same list mechanics apply as for municipal police. A passing score on the Law Enforcement Examination places you on an eligible list, and appointments are made from the top of that list under the rule of three. Veterans preference applies and is added after you pass, and residency can affect your standing depending on the announcement. How it differs from the State Police
Do not confuse the State Park Police with the New Jersey State Police. The State Police run their own hiring process outside Civil Service and are covered separately on the state trooper page. The rank ladder
