Definition
Under direction, develops, administers, and coordinates a safety program for accident prevention, and to ensure the conformance with appropriate safety measures for the protection of all who occupy the facility and contiguous premises; reviews and analyzes accident and injury reports and related records; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Interprets and administers applicable federal and state safety laws and regulations impacting upon the operations of the facility.
- Develops plans and administers an effective safety and accident prevention program.
- Reviews suggestions and/or complaints of occupational safety hazards and determines appropriate course of action.
- Investigates accidents; reviews and analyzes all accident, injuries, or hazardous condition(s), reports and complaints; determines precipitating factors and prepares written reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- May develop, plan and administer special health and safety programs of the agency, including random drug and/or alcohol testing programs.
- Functions as liaison between the jurisdiction, workmen's compensation carrier and insurance companies.
- Prepares correspondence.
- Develops policies and procedures with which to implement safety directives and practices.
- Cooperates with local and state authorities in the investigation of accidents involving assigned vehicles, and non-vehicular accidents; interviews witnesses and obtains statements.
- Monitors the safety practices and activities of other supervisory staff to ensure compliance with safety programs and policies.
- Conducts safety instruction training for supervisors and other staff.
- Promotes oral and visual safety instruction awareness campaigns at local community safety instruction committee meetings.
- Compiles information; prepares and develops safety articles for publication.
- Coordinates the fire safety and prevention procedures in public buildings.
- Reviews plans and specifications for the construction of, remodel and/or repair of, existing structures; provides written recommendations for safety and fire prevention measures.
- Provides advice and guidance on issues relevant to safety and fire prevention.
- Conducts periodic inspection of buildings and their contiguous grounds for compliance with applicable safety standards.
- Prepares regular and special reports on the progress and status of safety programs and projects for administrative review.
- Establishes and maintains records and files.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in the safety inspection of public or private buildings and facilities, or industrial and construction operations involving the identification, investigation, analysis, and resolution of safety hazards.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of applicable state and federal safety laws, rules, and regulations impacting upon the operations of the facility.
- Knowledge of the precipitating factors likely to cause hazardous working conditions, and of the safety precautions and measures necessary to negate such conditions.

- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
