School Bus Driver is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition
Under direction, drives a school bus to transport students; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Drives school buses and transports students between pickup points and school or to various events, activities, and destinations.
- Checks, cleans, and performs minor servicing of buses.
- Checks gas, battery, oil, and water before departure.
- Checks vehicles for operating safety.
- Assists handicapped children and others out of and into vehicles.
- Maintains discipline of passengers.
- Adheres to safety rules when loading and unloading pupils.
- Prepares simple reports and keeps logs of trips.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) endorsement.
Effective October 1, 2005, appointees must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) endorsement and a School Bus (S) endorsement.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of safe and efficient operation of school buses.
- Knowledge of safe driving practices.
- Knowledge of care, maintenance, servicing, and minor repair of motor vehicles.
- Knowledge of State Motor Vehicle laws and regulations relating to the operation of school buses.
- Ability to analyze problems involving operation of school buses.
- Ability to learn quickly from explanations and demonstrations.
- Ability to drive school buses in a skilled and safe manner.
- Ability to check, clean, service, and make minor and emergency repairs to vehicles.
- Ability to keep records and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
