Definition

Under direction, performs varied tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of diesel engines in motor vehicles and/or automotive construction equipment; does other related duties as required.

Under direction, performs a variety of skilled mechanical tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of hydraulic systems used in motor vehicles and/or automotive construction equipment; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Repairs and maintains diesel engines using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and machines common to the trade.
• Diagnoses trouble, disassembles engines, and examines parts for defects and excessive wear.
• Reconditions and replaces parts such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves, and bushings, and using engine lathes, boring machines, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments.
• May weld and cut parts using arc welding and flame cutting equipment.
• May repair and maintain gasoline engines.
• May perform a variety of mechanical tasks involved in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and/or construction equipment.
• May test drive motor vehicles and/or construction equipment on public streets.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Disassembles, repairs, tests, and troubleshoots hydraulic systems.
• Disassembles hydraulic assembles, discards parts scheduled for replacement, and cleans reusable parts.
• Replaces parts or reworks defective parts by honing/lapping as required or routes parts to other shops for rework after visually or tactually examining surfaces for scratches that might later cause internal or external leakage.
• Assembles and adjusts to obtain fit to bearings, and adjusts stop rings, shims, retainers, and alignment as required.
• Sets up and operates hydraulic test stand or other equipment to test components for internal and external leakage, and sequential operation and fluid flow rates for specified pressures and lengths of time.
• Checks solenoids, potentiometers, and motors for electrical continuity.
• Tests hydraulic pumps by making break-in-run to seat pistons and cylinders and then makes functional flow tests under time or pressures specified in technical orders.
• Troubleshoots items and makes adjustments necessary to eliminate malfunctions discovered, and to meet requirements of technical specifications.
• May also repair and maintain gasoline and diesel engines.
• In the garage and in the field, does mechanical work on motorized equipment including specialized trash trucks, street sweepers, and compactors.
• Performs work involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of hydraulic systems, in sweeper and conveyor systems, in stabilization, parking, and dumping systems, and in cylinders, valves, and solenoid systems.
• Welds and replaces body steel, packing blades, and cutting edges.
• When necessary performs a variety of other automotive repair and maintenance tasks on a variety of motor vehicles and/or construction equipment.
• Obtains, stores, records, safeguards, and uses equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Maintains essential records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related unit.

Requirements

<b>TRAINING</b>

Successful completion of one (1) year of training in diesel engine repair at an accredited community college or vocational school.

<b>TRAINING</b>

Successful completion of one (1) year of training in automotive technology at an accredited community college or vocational school.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of diesel engines.

Two (2) years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of engines and hydraulic systems.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a valid New Jersey driver's license.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of hydraulic principles, the physical principles governing the behavior of fluids (liquids and gases).
• Knowledge of systems and equipment used in maintaining and checking hydraulic equipment.
• Knowledge of basic electrical and mechanical principles.
• Knowledge of troubleshooting procedures used to isolate malfunctions in hydraulic systems.
• Knowledge of basic information sources, technical orders, and other applicable publications and forms.
• Ability to hook up and operate a hydraulic test stand to perform dynamic static pressure tests and pump performance tests.
• Ability to make electrical tests of components in hydraulic systems.

• Ability to read and interpret technical orders, manufacturers' specification manuals, parts supply books, and blueprints and schematic diagrams.
• Ability to isolate and diagnose the cause of malfunctions, and make necessary adjustment or repair.

Possession of a certificate as a diesel mechanic issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence may be substituted for one (1) year of formal training.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.

In accordance with Federal regulation 82:40, appointees responsible for the repair or servicing of motor vehicle air conditioners are required to possess and maintain a valid certification as an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician, commensurate with the type of equipment serviced, issued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

In accordance with N.J.A.C. 13:20-46.8, appointees responsible for performing the emissions inspections on diesel-powered vehicles will be required to successfully complete a course of Instruction on Diesel Emission Inspection provided through the Appointing Authority. Appointees may be required to successfully complete re-training.

In accordance with the New Jersey Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulation 29 CFR 1910.178(l) (1), appointees responsible for the operation of industrial trucks (powered forklifts) will be required to obtain and maintain a current certification as a Powered Industrial Truck Operator issued by the New Jersey Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Appointees may be required to successfully complete re-training.

In accordance with N.J.A.C. 13:20-45.16, appointees responsible for performing emissions repairs to gasoline-fueled vehicles will be required to successfully complete the Emissions Technical Educational Program, and maintain a current certification as an Emissions Repairer Technician.

In accordance with N.J.A.C. 13:20-43.17, appointees responsible for performing inspections to motor vehicles will be required to successfully complete the training and maintain a current certification as a Motor Vehicle Inspector.

Appointees responsible for repairing or servicing motor vehicles equipped for alternate fuel will be required to successfully complete training and obtain an Alternate Fuel Certification. Appointees who possess an ASE Certification in Alternate Fuel are considered to have met this requirement.

Appointees responsible for repair and servicing of suspension/ steering systems are required to possess and maintain an Automobile Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Suspension and Steering.

Appointees responsible for repair and servicing of brakes are required to possess and maintain a valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Brake Repairs.

Appointees may also be required to obtain ASE certifications in Engine Repair A-1 and Engineer Performance A-8.
