Definition

Under direction, takes the lead over one or more Building Maintenance Workers and performs varied, simple, routine, and moderately physically strenuous tasks involved in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings and grounds; does other related duties as required.

Under the direction of a Supervising Security Guard or other supervisory official, takes the lead over one or more security guard(s) responsible for patrolling and monitoring public buildings and grounds to safeguard people and property; performs other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Takes the lead over other Building Maintenance Workers in the performance of their duties.
  • Scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors using heavy (industrial type) powered scrubbers and buffers.
  • Washes walls using a powered wall washing machine.
  • Vacuum cleans rugs using heavy (industrial type) vacuum cleaners.
  • Adjusts, cleans, and oils the above machines and changes brushes, rollers, buffers, and other attachments.
  • Washes and replaces venetian blinds and washes ceiling fixtures and room partitions using ladders and scaffolds.
  • Moves heavy furniture, supplies, and equipment.
  • Does the full range of cleaning duties in an assigned area (building, hospital ward, and so forth) following general instructions on the work to be done.
  • Uses various preparations to clean and maintain linoleum, wood, marble, and various kinds of floors, wall and ceiling surfaces, and furniture.
  • Removes stains from a variety of surfaces using chemicals and cleaning solutions.
  • Occasionally works on ladders and scaffolds to change light bulbs, replace venetian blinds, wash walls, and so forth.
  • Cleans business offices, cafeterias, living quarters, classrooms, halls, gymnasiums, auditoriums, hospital wards, lavatories, and other buildings.
  • Burns trash in incinerators.
  • Moves furniture and sets up tables and chairs in an auditorium or hall.
  • Polishes metal fixtures and trimmings.
  • May tend low pressure boilers used to produce hot water and heat.
  • Tidies working areas by arranging equipment, materials, and articles in an orderly manner.
  • Deposits sweeping in trash cans.
  • Services water coolers.
  • Mows lawns, trims hedges, rakes and burns leaves and refuse, and trims driveway and sidewalk edges using spades and hoes.
  • Shovels snow from driveways and sidewalks, and spreads sand, salt, or ashes on icy surfaces to prevent slipping.
  • Aids carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers, and steamfitters and other trades persons by carrying tools and materials, placing and removing ladders, and cleaning up after work has been done.

  • When so directed, receives, reviews, and adjusts complaints, and gives assignments to assigned employees.

  • Protection of Buildings, Contents, and Occupants from Hazards:
  • Visually inspects window bars, doors, locks, and other fixtures and ensures they are secure and properly locked.
  • Inspects assigned areas for those conditions that may contribute to fire (e.g. discarded burning cigarettes) and ensures that fire extinguishers are in place, secured, and operational.
  • Observes odors in buildings or on the grounds to detect the source of smoke and/or gas seepage.
  • Listens for unusual sounds to detect leaking plumbing, breakage of glass and tampering of locks or windows.
  • Searches designated areas for explosive devices using a flashlight and precautionary measures not to disturb potential explosives, and notifies bomb disposal unit by calling a special number at the local police department.
  • Patrols, by vehicle or on foot, grounds adjacent to public buildings to detect hazards such as fire, theft, and vandalism.
  • Monitors electronic surveillance equipment; responds to and reports all suspicious activity.
  • Maintains an orderly flow of individuals entering and leaving the building.
  • Examines credentials, such as employee passes and press passes, at entry point buildings or facilities and/or issues special passes to visitors.
  • Requests verbal or written information from individuals regarding their destination, identity, and nature of visit.

  • Notifies other guard personnel to be on the lookout for a person or persons of a particular description.
  • Gives verbal warnings to individuals of regulations such as disorderly conduct, loitering, smoking, or entry without proper passes.
  • Obtains verbal descriptions, via telephone or walkie-talkie, of person or persons present in the building who may present a potential danger.
  • Informs building occupants to evacuate premises and warns about impending danger from explosives and fires.
  • Gives instructions to occupants for prompt evacuation to designated safe areas.
  • Appears in court as a witness to testify against persons being charged with vandalism, theft, fire, or misconduct on government property.
  • Responds to general inquiries about the location of persons or services available, physical layout of a facility, etc.
  • Accidents:
  • Determines the severity of a person's injuries and obtains assistance by contacting an emergency vehicle for transport to emergency medical care facilities.
  • Administers emergency first aid when necessary.
  • Traffic Control:
  • Stands at intersections and gives hand signals to moving vehicles to ensure smooth and rapid flow of traffic.
  • Guides pedestrians in crossing intersections to prevent vehicular congestion and accidents.
  • Checks cars in restricted parking areas, such as employee or visitor parking lots for parking authorization stickers and issues warnings or citations to unauthorized individuals.
  • Prevents entry or use of a restricted area by certain vehicles by using hand signals or explaining to drivers the regulations or rules which prohibit entry.
  • Admits entry of vehicles after identifying pertinent data such as driver's identification, weight, and size of vehicle.
  • Drives government vehicle(s) belonging to an employee to move it from an area where it is obstructing the smooth flow of traffic.

  • Takes the lead over one or more security guard responsible for patrolling and monitoring premises and personnel.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to lower level guards when difficult or unusual situations arise.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
