Definition

Under direction, installs heavy duty industrialized type of machinery and equipment according to layout plans, blueprints and other drawings, using hoists, lift trucks, hand-tools and power tools; does related work as required.

Under direction, performs various tasks in electric arc and oxyacetylene welding and cutting; maintains, repairs, rebuilds, and fabricates metal equipment and tools; may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accord with approved trade practices; takes the lead over and gives suitable assignments to those assigned as helpers; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Reads blueprint and schematic drawings to determine work procedures.
• Dismantles and reassembles machines, using hammers, wrenches, crowbars and other appropriate tools.
• Moves machinery and equipment, using hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks, etc.
• Assembles and installs equipment such as shafting, conveyors, tram rails, pumps, compressors, and gear drives using hand-tools and power tools.
• Constructs foundation for machines, using appropriate tools and building materials, such as wood, cement, and steel.
• Aligns machines and equipment, using hoists, jacks, hand-tools, squares, rules, micrometers, and plumb bobs, etc.
• Aligns gears, wheels, bearings, power shafting, and pulleys.
• Attaches motors and connects belts to prepare a machine for use.
• Assembles machines and bolts, welds, rivets, or otherwise fastens them to foundation or other structures using hand-tools and power tools.
• May operate engine lathe, milling machine, drill press, and mechanical saws for the purpose of fabricating or repairing of parts and equipment.
• May repair and lubricate machines and equipment.
• Removes and replaces worn parts using hand and power tools.
• May fabricate and install all types of sheet metal work for sketches, drawings or blueprints.
• Uncrates, assembles, installs and tests new machinery and equipment.
• Changes the lay-out and set-out of machines and mechanical equipment.
• Keeps machines and equipment in efficient and safe operating condition.
• Makes periodic inspections of all machines, equipment, and shafting to see if they are operating properly.
• Makes time and material estimates.
• Prepare reports and keeps records.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related unit.
• Operates various electric resistance welding machines such as spot, seam, and flash, or uses a manual gas torch welding process such as oxyacetylene to join a variety of different kinds of parts or components.
• Determines the welding techniques and machine settings to be used; assembles and sets up the parts to be welded following guides such as resistance welding control charts, specifications, accepted shop practices, and oral or written instructions from the supervisor to make the required welds.
• Welds metal parts and structures that may vary in size, shape, and thickness, and welds dissimilar metals such as copper to steel to weld all types of commonly used metals and alloys.
• Controls the metals and determines the welding technique to use for preventing distortion, burning of the metals or other defects when welding in hard to reach places that must meet close tolerance, strength, and other requirements to ensure evenness of fit and smoothness of contour.
• Welds materials in various positions such as flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead to perform the required welds.
• Devises special jigs and fixtures to hold parts to be welded by using techniques such as preheating, heat sinks, and stress relieving to maintain specified dimensions to prevent distortion or burning of the parts being welded.
• Controls the torch or arc and the positioning and feeding of the welding rod or electrode when welding manually to prevent burning of base metals, complete fusing of base filler metals, and to obtain the desired penetration and weld head dimensions.
• Obtains, stores, records, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials, and supplies when performing work.
• May prepare itemized work orders of work performed and materials used in accord with established policy and procedures.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Requirements

<b>TRAINING:</b>

Successful completion of a two (2) year training program in basic welding operations.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience in the installation, moving and disassembly of industrial type machinery and equipment involving the use of plans, blueprints and/or drawings.

One (1) year of varied experience in welding which shall have included oxyacetylene and arc welding and cutting.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, practices, and duties involved in fabricating, installing, moving, dismantling, maintaining, and repairing of machines, equipment and incidental appurtenances.
• Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in installing, moving and dissembling industrial type machinery and equipment.
• Knowledge of the uses of a variety of hand and power tools.
• Knowledge of the purpose and uses of such measuring devices as squares, calipers, micrometers and plumb bobs, etc.
• Ability to understand and apply instructions, craft techniques, and principles when reading blueprints and schematic drawings in order to determine work procedures.
• Ability to apply shop mathematics to do arithmetic computations in connection with installation of equipment.
• Ability to visualize installations from blueprints and relationships of parts when assembling equipment.
• Ability to perceive pertinent details when aligning machines and equipment.
• Ability to coordinate eyes and hands rapidly and accurately when fastening machines to foundations using hand and power tools.
• Ability to move fingers and manipulate small objects such as bolts and rivets with fingers.
• Ability to move hands easily and skillfully to align machines using hand-tools.
• Ability to align machines and equipment using squares, rules, micrometers and plumb bobs.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematic drawings when assembling machines and fastening them to foundations.
• Ability to carry heavy parts, equipment and materials as required.
• Ability to climb, balance and maintain body equilibrium when working from heights to install large and heavy equipment such as cranes and hoists.
• Ability to reach above or below waist line to install parts of machinery.
• Ability to use hands to grasp hand-tools and measuring devices, and to fit and stall machine parts, and to use fingers to fit and adjust intricate parts of machinery and work with small objects like nuts and bolts.
• Ability to make time and material estimates.
• Ability to prepare reports and keeps records.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
