CHIEF OF COUNTY INVESTIGATORS
Sergeant, lieutenant, captain, deputy chief and chief of county investigators are one sworn role at ascending levels of command within a county prosecutor's office. The chief runs the investigative division; the ranks below supervise squads and cases.
All of them are appointed by the prosecutor and serve at that officer's pleasure, so promotion runs through the office rather than through a competitive examination — unusual for law enforcement ranks, and a direct consequence of the prosecutor being a gubernatorial appointee.

Chief of County Investigators is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.
