Definition

Under direction, is responsible for developing, promoting, supervising, and presenting educational programs on environmental studies; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Develops curricula for program presentation to students through grade level 12.
• Prepares papers and reports on environmental issues.
• Prepares educational materials and instructional programs.
• Conducts investigations of field sites for program use.
• Provides guidance and leadership in program delivery.
• Prepares and conducts teacher workshops and training seminars.
• Presents specialized public programs on the natural and physical sciences.
• Utilizes the mobile environmental education unit (Enviro-Van), the Center for Environmental Studies, commission owned canoes, and various park areas for presentation of scheduled programs.
• Participates in the development and periodic review of specialized natural areas and interpretive trails.
• Assists in the development and dissemination of publications.
• Utilizes photographic supplies and audio-visual equipment in the course of official duties.
• Conducts lectures on environmental concerns.
• Assists in the presentation of annual budget requests.
• Purchases authorized supplies and equipment.
• Organizes and maintains educational displays containing live organisms.
• Assigns and supervises the work of other employees.
• Maintains essential records and files.
• May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in the environmental, biological, or chemical sciences, or in environmental engineering.

Experience

One (1) year of professional experience in the planning, development, and administration of environmental studies programs.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the principles, theory, and techniques involved in the broad field of environmental sciences.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations relevant to environmental pollution.
• Ability to develop and conduct environemntal educational programs.
• Ability to ocnduct lectures, workshops, and training seminars on environemntal matters.
• Ability to assign and supervise the work of other employees.
• Ability to prepare educational materials and instructional programs.
• Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
• Ability to analyze and interpret laws, rules, and regulations on environmental matters.
• Ability to organize assigned field and technical work and develop effective work methods.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Note

A Master's degree in the environemntal, biological, or chemical sciences, or in engineering may be substituted for the one (1) year of required experience.

A valid engineer's license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineer's and Land Surveyor's may be substituted for the degree in environmental engineering.
