Definition
Under direction, performs research collecting, summarizing, and compiling information on criminal activities, drug abuse, criminals, and individuals indirectly involved with illicit activities; does other relate duties as required.
Examples of work
- Compiles, summarizes and organizes information pertaining to criminal activities, drug abuse, criminals and their associates.
- Analyzes the information and highlights common links between crimes, individuals, organizations and groups suspected of illicit activities.
- Contacts various agencies, criminal information centers, investigative agencies to secure information on criminal activities, indictments, drug abuse and criminal convictions.
- Reviews newspaper articles and reports by law enforcement personnel and agencies, trial transcripts and other documents to extract pertinent information.
- Organizes the information and establishes files and records for data to be retrieved and cross-referenced.
- Compiles statistical information and other data required for various reports on criminal activities and drug abuse.
- May supervise assigned clerical personnel involved in the maintenance of criminal records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Four (4) years of police work or experience conducting research and statistical studies.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the sources of statistical and other data and the methods of preparing data into reports.
- Ability to compile and tabulate data.
- Ability to analyze raw datas.
- Ability to organize work and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
