Definition

Under direction, does field and office work involved in conducting physical inspections of properties and buildings to detect changes, additions or other information required by the Assessors; may perform a variety of responsible clerical tasks in an assessing office; does other related work.

Examples of work

  • Inspects properties or buildings determine whether the alterations or additions made warrant an increase in assessments.
  • Inspect properties which demolition have been reported and determine what structures have been demolished so that the Assessors can consider whether a reduction in assessments is in order.
  • Conducts neighborhood tours in order to update property descriptions.
  • Takes physical measurements of all buildings on property.
  • Performs the work involved in posting of annual assessments.
  • Assists in the compilation of local tax lists.
  • Prepares and checks the recapitulation or Tax Rolls
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in the field investigations which shall have included gathering of significant data.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

  • Knowledge of procedures involved in inspecting and detecting changes in buildings.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to gather information and prepare suitable reports.
  • Knowledge of the state and municipal assessing policies and regulations.
  • Ability to understand established rules and regulations.
  • Ability to interview persons of varying backgrounds.
  • Ability to use tact and courtesy in making investigations.
  • Ability to observe significant conditions.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain records and files.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read writes, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
