Definition

Under direction, performs all general sheet metal work involved in layout, construction, maintenance, and erection of sheet metal structures and equipment; works with various machine and hand tools common to the sheet metal trade; may prepare or work from sketches, blueprints, and specification in accordance with accepted trade practices; provides assignments to those assigned as helpers; does other related work.

Examples of work

• Fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs sheet metal products and equipment, such as control boxes, drainpipes, ventilators, and furnace casings, according to job order or blueprints.
• Selects gauge and type of sheet metal according to product being fabricated and knowledge of metal sheet.
• Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as shears, brakes, bending rolls, and punch and drill presses to cut, bend, and straighten sheet metal.
• Shapes metal over anvils, blocks, or forms using hammer.
• Sets up and operates soldering and welding equipment to join together sheet metal parts.
• Smooths seams, joints, or burred surfaces, using files and portable grinder or buffer.
• Installs assemblies in plant or work site according to blueprint specifications using hand tools and portable power tools.
• Inspects assemblies and installation for conformance with specifications, using measuring instruments, such as calipers, scales and micrometer.
• Installs, repairs, and/or makes ducts, gutters, downspouts, copper leaders, ventilators, roofing, flashing chain guards, clamps, hoods, drains, containers, and other sheet metal products.
• Using the parallel line, radical line or triangulation methods, develops patterns for various sheet metal objects.
• Joins pieces using various methods of fastening such as welded, "C" sunk, lap riveted, standing riveted, grooved double, and various types of circular seams.
• Constructs double hem, square and standing hem edges, beads and notes sheet metal, and welds, brazes, and solder joints.
• Uses electric and hand shears, folding brakes, hardies, files, center punches, pneumatic hammers, swages, dollies, stakes, folders, edgers and trammels.
• Erects and works from ladders and scaffolding.
• Prepares and/or works from sketches, blueprints, and specification in accordance with accepted trade practices.
• Prepare time and materials estimates.
• Provides assignments to helpers.
• May solder, rivet, straighten, and other needed repair work to repair leaky and malfunctioning pots, streamers, cans, pails, coffee, tea and hot water runs, aluminum dishes, galvanized sinks, tray and guard rails, bread and food trucks and other kitchen and dairy equipment.
• Constructs, repairs, and maintains ventilators and air ducts.
• Conducts inspections and constructs tin roofs; does the work involved in placing, soldering, and shaping of the tin.
• Repairs slate roofs, and does the needed flashing, papering, cutting, and punching prior to the installation of the slate.
• May instruct inmates and/or patients in sheet metal work and takes the measures necessary to ensure safety, custody, welfare, and work progress.
• Nail strip shingles, rubberoid, and other weatherproofing materials on slate roofs.
• Solders all types of gasoline tanks, constructs new sheet metal gasoline tanks, solders all types of vehicle cooling radiators, and constructs steel cabs for equipment.
• Constructs all types of metal toolboxes and metal drip pans.
• Constructs all sizes and types of stovepipes and smokestacks.
• May erect and use ladders and scaffolding.
• May assists other craftsman in their work.
• Maintains records.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• <b>REQUIREMENTS
• EXPERIENCE:</b>
• Three (3) years of experience in sheet metal work involving a variety of layout, construction, maintenance and erection tasks.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the procedures involved in inspecting, repairing, constructing, and maintaining copper leaders and gutters and slate and other roofs, including the operations of flashing, papering, cutting, and punching prior to the installation of slate and other types of roofing work.
• Knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of ventilators and air ducts.
• Ability to analyze problems involving sheet metal work, organize assigned construction and repair work and develop effective work methods.
• Ability to inspect, repair, construct, and maintain copper leaders and gutters tin leaders and gutters, and repair slate roofs.
• Ability to inspect and repair kitchen, dairy, and other equipment.
• Ability to construct, maintain, and repair ventilators and air ducts, and install strip shingles and other weatherproofing materials on the roofs of buildings.
• Ability to requisition, store, safeguard and properly use needed equipment, materials and supplies.
• Ability to maintain records of equipment, materials, supplies, work done and time spent.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
