Definition
Under direction, plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, and oversees inspection activities in a jurisdiction to ensure that public transportation vehicles and/or parking lot proprietors comply with various codes and regulations governing their operations; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Oversees and supervises employees involved in inspection activities.
- Supervises the conduct of field inspections of taxicabs, buses, limousines, and/or other passenger vehicles to ensure that they comply with prescribed codes and regulations.
- Supervises the conduct of field inspections of parking lots to ensure they comply with prescribed codes and regulations governing the hours of operation, rates charged, and so forth.
- Conducts and/or supervises the conduct of physical inspections of taxicabs, buses, limousines, and/or other passenger vehicles for cleanliness and general safety of vehicle, and may report on areas of needed repair.
- Investigates and/or supervises the investigation of complaints by passengers against drivers who violate codes and regulations governing vehicle operation.
- Coordinates the work of the unit, issues assignments, and provides and evaluates work performance.
- Issues summons and testifies in court and/or at related hearings as to the violations recorded.
- Prepares and/or supervises the preparation of clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports regarding various inspections.
- Maintains essential records and files
- Periodically observes vehicles along route to determine whether service is provided according to schedule.
- Recommends service or route changes, additional buses, and revised schedules to improve service to the public.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Four (4) years of experience in the inspection of motor vehicles for the purpose of code compliance, (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

- Knowledge of methods used to conduct vehicular inspections.
- Knowledge of safety precautions appropriate for the operation of public transportation/passenger vehicles.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to provide assignments and evaluate work performance.
- Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work procedures.
- Ability to note significant conditions and take proper action in accord with prescribed procedures.
- Ability to work harmoniously with associates and others.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply state and local codes and regulations regarding the operation of public transportation/passenger vehicles.
- Ability to read and interpret information on the geographic layout of the jurisdiction.
- Ability to conduct and supervise the conduct of field inspections.
- Ability to prepare clear, sound, and accurate reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to investigate complaints.
- Ability to analyze established service routes and recommend changes for enhanced service.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
