ARMORER 3

Definition

Under supervision of an Armorer 1 at a National Guard facility, does janitorial, maintenance, and repair work or assists Department of Defense maintenance teams in maintenance/repair projects; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Performs daily/weekly/monthly job assignments such as sweeping, dusting, waxing, window washing, scrubbing/polishing, and grounds maintenance.
• Keeps offices, rest rooms, lavatories, and other areas clean and orderly.
• Loads and unloads equipment/material, and moves and stocks equipment/material.
• Cleans grounds and collects refuse for storage prior to disposal, and disposes of refuse.
• Uses hand powered and powered (electric/gas) tools/equipment in performance of assigned tasks/duties.
• Replaces electrical sockets, cord fuses, plugs, fluorescent/incandescent lamps, broken glass, sash cords, chains, operators, door hinges, knobs, and other items.
• Touches up or repairs interior/exterior of facility or structures.
• Repairs roof leaks and gutter leaks.
• Repairs defective plumbing fixtures including faucets and flush valves, and clears plugged pipes/drains.
• Repairs doors, floors, tables, chairs, and other furniture.
• Cares for grounds, shrubs, sidewalks, and steps.
• Cleans basins and storm water lines.
• Mows lawns.
• Shovels or plows snow.
• May assist in supervision of subordinates to include distribution of work, recommendation of discipline, and recommendation for promotion.
• Acts as the Chief Armorer in the absence of the Armorer 1.
• Checks operation of heating equipment including boiler gauges and controls, traps, strainers, boiler water level, oil storage tank gauges, water treatment equipment, vacuum pumps, circulating pumps, forced air draft fans and automatic louvers.
• Cleans boiler tubes and sectional boilers, flues, and fire boxes and keeps boiler rooms clean.
• Reports deficiencies in heating plant equipment to the supervisor.
• Reports safety and security hazards to the supervisor.
• Performs all services required to support all National Guard functions at the facility.
• During periods of local/state/national emergency, meets necessary work schedules to meet the demand and/or troop function for normal and special duties in support of activity at the facility.
• During rental activity at the installation, performs duties as required and scheduled by a supervisor.
• Maintains reports.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in the general care, maintenance, and repair of buildings and grounds.

License

Appointees must possess a valid Black Seal Boiler Fireman License issued by the Bureau of Mechanical Inspection, Department of Labor.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of boilers, maintenance thereof, and appropriate repair and remedy.
• Knowledge of supervising procedures and methods of armory management procedures.
• Knowledge of maintenance of armories, heating systems, and minor plumbing/electrical repair.
• Knowledge of time and attendance reporting methods.
• Knowledge of the military chain of command after a period of training.
• Knowledge of procurement procedures for material and supplies.
• Knowledge of department disciplinary procedures after a period of training. Knowledge of the staff organization of the NJ Department of Military and Veterans= Affairs after a period of training.
• Ability to keep reports.
• Ability to climb and work from ladders/scaffolds.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
