Definition
Under immediate supervision of a higher level Public Health Representative or other supervisory official in the Department of Health and Senior Services, learns to perform the office and field work activities of a specific public health program in the department; does other related duties.
Examples of work
As trainee and productive worker: Learns to perform the office and/or fieldwork required to promote the objectives of a specific public health program. Works with municipal and county employees to coordinate specialized program activities with local authorities. Learns to organize and conduct public health surveys and follow-up activities, compiles data obtained, and participates in developing final determinations and evaluations. Confers with physicians, patients, and local government officials and their representatives to prepare case histories, reports, and data supporting diagnostic, or reported vital statistics information, and other related data. Identifies needs for health information within local communities and learns to plan, prepare, distribute, and evaluate related health education materials. Prepares correspondence. Prepares reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Maintains records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge of the methods used to collect and analyze data. Knowledge of report writing methods. Knowledge of public health principles. Ability to interpret and apply laws, rules and regulations. Ability to conduct field trips, surveys, studies, and investigations. Ability to learn to coordinate program activities. Ability to confer with physicians, nurses, patients, and others involved with the department program. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others who are interested or involved in the work of the program. Ability to prepare correspondence. Ability to perform the duties of the position after an inservice training program. Ability to prepare reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. ADVANCEMENT Appointees who successfully complete the 12-month training period will be eligible for promotion to the title among the following for which they have been trained: Public Health Representative 3, Public Health Representative 3 Communicable Disease, Public Health Representative 3 Certified Tumor Registrar. The inability of an employee in this trainee title to attain a level of performance warranting advancement to a title listed above shall be considered as cause for separation.
