Definition

Under direction, supervises the work involved in providing needed medical and social assistance for clients; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Supervises the work involved in organizing tasks concerned with medical social problems of clients.
  • Provides assignments and instructions to medical social workers and other assigned employees.
  • Participates in meetings and conferences regarding medical social work services.
  • Confers with physicians and other personnel to discuss client's total treatment plan.
  • Supervises the investigation of cases to discern the appropriateness and need of hospital, clinical or dispensary care.
  • Supervises the contacting of patients in hospitals to obtain their home, financial, and social information.
  • Supervises the preparation of case history reports and special and statistical reports covering medical social services.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Supervises the establishment and maintenance of records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from and accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Social Work.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience as a medical social worker.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of current medical social work practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the techniques used to gather, analyze, and evaluate information.
  • Knowledge of the social, financial, medical and other factors to be considered in identifying social service needs.
  • Ability to develop and execute plans for medical and social services.
  • Ability to provide assignments and instructions to assigned staff.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, patients and others involved in providing medical and social services.
  • Ability to prepare reports concerning case history, and special and statistical reports covering medical social services.
  • Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
