Definition

Under direction, supervises the work of staff engaged in investigating and interviewing applicants for public housing; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Organizes assigned supervisory work and develops effective work methods.
  • Provides assignments to subordinates, and supervises the performance of their work.
  • Evaluates data compiled by subordinates.
  • Prepares pertinent reports and vital statistics concerning dwelling units, families and their composition, income and housing needs, and the numbers and types of commercial enterprises and their basic requirements.
  • Conducts and supervises the conduct of interviews and investigations of applicants for public housing.
  • Analyzes and supervises the analysis of applications to determine eligibility.
  • Disseminates and supervises the dissemination of information to applicants regarding admission requirements, site requirements, rent payments, and other factors.
  • Trains new employees.
  • Maintains records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience in the dissemination, collection, and recording of information used to prepare reports of research or investigative activities, provide customer services, or make determinations of eligibility for programs or services in a public or private agency.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations concerning the eligibility of applicants for public housing, after a period of training
  • Knowledge of interviewing techniques.
  • Knowledge of supervisory methods.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply established rules and regulations.
  • Ability to provide assignments and instructions.
  • Ability to interview persons of varying backgrounds.
  • Ability to use tact and courtesy in making investigations.
  • Ability to observe significant conditions.
  • Ability to maintain records and files.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
