Definition
Under direction of a school principal, a physician, or other supervisory officer, performs professional nursing activities pursuant to a school health program within a school district; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Provides assistance to physicians in making medical and physical examinations of school children.
- Administers first aid in cases of accident or illness.
- Administers prescribed treatment and ensures that prescribed measures are carried out for the correction of special defects.
- Provides assistance to physicians in vaccinations and other inoculations.
- Confers with children and parents on need for medical care, and refers them to community agencies if needed.
- Administers vision and hearing tests.
- Measures and weighs students.
- Authorizes excuses from school for communicable and other illness.
- Examines children returning after absences for symptoms of diseases.
- Makes inspections of classrooms, lavatories, and other school premises to ensure that they are kept in a clean, sanitary condition.
- May give classroom health talks and instructions in the principles of personal hygiene, diet, and sanitation.
- Visits homes of school children and gives instructions regarding general health and hygiene.
- Obtains family and case histories of children.
- May assist in placing children in hospitals for operations or corrective treatment.
- Obtains, stores, safeguards, and makes proper use of medical equipment, materials, and supplies.

License
Registration as a Professional Nurse in the State of New Jersey.
Possession of a valid certificate as School Nurse or eligibility for a professional certificate as a School Nurse issued by the New Jersey Department of Education.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of nursing techniques, routine, and methods.
- Knowledge of the handling of varied types of persons at times under unusual circumstances or conditions.
- Knowledge of methods useful in seeing that prescribed measures are carried out for correction of special physical defects.
- Knowledge of clean and sanitary conditions relating to classrooms, lavatories, and other school premises.
- Knowledge of techniques to persuade persons, especially children, to observe instructions regarding general health and hygiene.
- Knowledge of proper use and care of medical equipment and materials.
- Knowledge of the establishment and maintenance of records and files.
- Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to analyze nursing problems, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to assist physicians in making medical and physical examinations of school children.
- Ability to administer first aid in cases of accident or illness, and to administer prescribed treatment.
- Ability to work harmoniously with associates, welfare organizations, parent-teachers associations, and other organizations and as far as possible with the student.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, make proper use of, and care for medical equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to maintain records and fields.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
