Definition

Under direction, performs responsible and varied fact finding investigations of the financial and other resources and the legal settlement of applicants and their families for the purpose of establishing eligibility for public assistance and/or takes the lead in a unit; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Performs the responsible and varied field investigations of applicants for public assistance in order to collect authenticated data concerning financial status, work histories, residence histories and the present settlement status, the names and addresses of legally responsible and other relatives, and other information required for the determination of eligibility.
  • Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods. Contacts and maintains cooperative relationships with other agencies.
  • Inspects birth certificates, baptismal and christening certificates, insurance policies, lodge and church organization benefit contracts, social security cards, rent receipts, tax and other bills and receipts, layoff notices and other documents and notes pertinent information.
  • Visits the personnel and employment offices of business and industrial firms in order to obtain information concerning the work histories and earnings of applicants and their legally responsible relatives.
  • Visits school, hospitals, clinics, and other institutions in order to gather pertinent information concerning the educational, health and other assets and liabilities of clients and the members of their families.
  • Visits tax offices, court houses, surrogate's offices and other municipal and county offices of legal record in order to obtain information concerning tax payments and arrearages, tax sales, mortgages, deeds, trusts, wills, and other legal instruments.
  • Prepares factual reports, documented as far as is possible, for the use of the social work staff concerning the financial and settlement status of individual clients.
  • Makes other investigations and inquiries as may be directed in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Keeps records of visits made and other simple records.

Experience

Two years of experience in work involving the investigation of personal financial matters, credit or other investigations.

<b>Knowledge</b>

Wide knowledge of the sources and methods of obtaining information regarding finances, property ownership, and potential financial resources.

<b>Ability</b>

Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods. To work harmoniously with associates.

To establish and maintain cooperative relationships with clients, businessmen, employers, the representatives of banks, loan societies, insurance companies, hospitals, schools, and that portion of the public interested in or concerned with the work of the department.

To prepare dear, concise and accurate reports of investigations, and to keep needed records.

Good health and freedom from disabling physical and mental defects which would impair the proper performance of the required duties or which might endanger the health and safety of oneself or others.
