Definition

Under direction, supervises the work of subordinate supervisors and other employees engaged in the work involved in the installation, construction, repair, rebuilding, and maintenance of plumbing fixtures, piping, and equipment, which involves the general and comprehensive responsibility for its efficient functioning; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The General Supervisor, Plumbing has the highest degree and scope of supervisory responsibility for plumbing work within the jurisdiction, including ensuring that work is performed in accordance with the National Standard Plumbing Code.

The General Supervisor, Plumbing has final authority for determining matters involving the technical aspects of the work, and full responsibility for assuring efficient and economical work operations. Most decisions made are not subject to review since there is no higher level of technical supervision.

PLANNING

Participates in establishment of goals and major work schedules, and determination of long-range manpower requirements.

WORK DIRECTION

Schedules, coordinates, and directs the accomplishment of work operations directly and through subordinate supervisors.

Determines personnel, material, equipment, and facilities needed.

Establishes basic priorities and work sequences, and maintains balanced work load through proper distribution of work projects and allotment of manpower, equipment, and materials.

Examples of work

  • Directs and coordinates activities of workers engaged in installation, construction, maintenance, repair, and expansion of the plumbing system.
  • Plans and lays out major plumbing repairs or renovations.
  • Directs activities of subordinate supervisory personnel who oversee installation, maintenance, and repair of the plumbing system.
  • Prepares and/or works from sketches, plans, and specifications and roughing-in- sheets in accordance with the plumbing code or approved trade practices.
  • Inspects field projects to confirm conformance to specifications and codes.
  • Makes time and material estimates.
  • Requisitions necessary supplies and equipment for plumbing projects.
  • Supervises the requisitioning obtaining, storage, safeguarding, and proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Prepares suitable reports and recommendations.
  • May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Five (5) years experience in plumbing work involving a variety of layout installation and maintenance tasks, two of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge necessary to properly plan, layout, install, and repair plumbing apparatus and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the preparation and interpretation of schematic drawings of plumbing installations.
  • Knowledge of keeping needed records and of giving suitable assignments and instructions.
  • Knowledge of effective supervisory principles and techniques.
  • Ability to prepare and interpret schematic drawings of plumbing installations.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints of plumbing installations.
  • Ability to analyze plumbing problems, to organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods, and to give suitable assignments and instructions.
  • Ability to supervise others in the performance of their work in accordance with established standards, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
