Supervising Traffic Investigator is a local service title. Definition

Under direction, supervises a group of employees and performs the work involved in conducting investigations and making reports regarding appealed traffic summonses and citizen's complaints concerning traffic conditions; does other related work.

Examples of work

  • Gives suitable assignments to traffic investigators and other employees and supervises the performance of their work.
  • Coordinates activities of the unit with representatives of other units regarding matters of work accomplishment, priorities and procedures.
  • Conducts and/or supervises the conducting of surveys and makes recommendations concerning the establishment of loading zones, bus stops and taxi stands.
  • Prepares recommendations for the specific type, design and layout of signs or Markings when these devices are found to be warranted.
  • Acts as a liaison party between the Department of Transportation and the city council or appropriate municipal or county officials concerned with traffic ordinances, resolutions, or regulations which require the approval of the Commissioner of Transportation.
  • Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs of the unit and has responsibility for effectively recommending hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
  • Supervises the preparation and processing of all jurisdiction's traffic regulations, including the establishment of no-passing, no parking, speed zones, through streets, etc.
  • Supervises the investigations of appealed traffic summons and testifies in court pertaining to findings.
  • Supervises the investigation of complaints from citizens pertaining to traffic conditions and hazards and prepares recommendations for alterations and additions where these are required.
  • Prepares correspondence in the course of official duties.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Supervises the maintainenance of records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, or related units.

Experience

Four (4) year of experience in the area of traffic regulations, traffic investigation or traffic control.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the proper procedures involved in investigating.
  • Knowledge of established rules and regulations pertinent to traffic investigations.
  • Knowledge of the varied types of devices, equipments and methods used in traffic control systems and their advantages and limitation under varying conditions.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with modern statistical theory, methods, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of effective supervisory principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the equipment, devices, and procedures used in making traffic investigations, surveyed, and studies of speed, driver behavior, parking and other related studies.
  • Ability to assign and supervise the work of other employees, provide them with suitable guidance and instructions, review and evaluate their job performance.
  • Ability to interview persons of varying backgrounds
  • Ability to use tact and courtesy in making investigations.
  • Ability to observe significant conditions.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information system used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiency to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
