Definition

Under direction, prepares site plans, landscape plans, cost estimates, and specifications for park and recreational facilities, public beautification projects, and public buildings, and supervises the installation and construction of such projects; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Prepares grading plans and cross sections to be used in developing park and recreational facilities.
• Prepares and processes applications for federal and state financial grant programs relating to public beautification programs.
• Prepares cost estimates and supervises the installation of landscaping for areas included in the Green Acres Open Space and Urban Beautification programs.
• Designs and drafts plans to be used in planting trees and shrubbery in parks and recreation areas along with accompanying plant lists, sizes, specifications, and cost estimates.
• Designs architectural details for various projects.
• Reviews site designs and proposals in urban renewal project areas.
• Prepares and reviews designs for the beautification of roadway areas.
• Reviews landscape plans for garden apartments, industrial plants, and commercial buildings and makes recommendations related to these plans.
• Acts as technical advisor to government agencies on matters pertaining to landscape maintenance and tree care.
• Prepares pencil or crayon sketches.
• Prepares clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports of landscape matters containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
• Maintains essential records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture or Landscape Design.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in landscape design.

License

Appointees must possess a license as a Landscape Architect issued by the New Jersey State Board of Architects.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of landscape principles and ideas on which roads, parks, and recreation facilities are constructed.
• Knowledge of sources of information from which the newest developments and methods in landscaping may be obtained.
• Knowledge of and familiarity with the various types of trees, shrubs, vines, and grasses which may be used in soil erosion control, in beautifying roadsides, and of the types of soils in which various trees, shrubs, vines, and grasses will grow and flourish.
• Knowledge of care and maintenance of instruments, materials, and supplies used in landscape architecture.
• Knowledge of methods and procedures used in designing plans to be used in planting grasses, vines, shrubs, and trees and the preparation of plant lists, sizes, methods of handling, specifications, and cost estimates.
• Knowledge of architectural details.
• Ability to analyze problems involved in landscape architectural requirements as they relate to specific projects.
• Ability to organize assigned landscape architectural work and develop appropriate work procedures.
• Ability to give assignments, instructions, and supervision to employees.
• Ability to design and develop landscape plans for roads, parks, and recreation facilities including architectural details.
• Ability to care for and maintain instruments, materials, and supplies.
• Ability to keep detailed records of all landscape construction projects.
• Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports of landscape architecture projects containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
• Ability to maintain essential records and files.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
