Definition

Under direction, performs routine laundry duties including sorting, checking, ironing, pressing, operating laundry equipment, and checking clean clothing and linen in and/or out of linen rooms; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Assists with operating one or more commercial type laundry machine(s) including washers, extractors, tumblers, dryers, presses, irons, and other related equipment.
  • Ensures that appropriate amount of soap, detergent, bleach, and other washing and cleaning compounds are measured and used properly.
  • Ensures that wash and rinse waters are maintained at proper temperature.
  • Assists with preparing laundry chemical compounds and mixtures.
  • Receives, sorts, inspects, classifies, folds, counts, and otherwise checks items of clothing and other linen sent to the laundry and/or linen rooms.
  • Performs minor repairs and adjustments to laundry equipment.
  • Maintains records.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Ability to operate commercial type laundry equipment including washers, extractors, tumblers, and presses.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments to laundry equipment.
  • Ability to operate assigned units of laundry equipment.
  • Ability to select the appropriate washing soaps and detergents, bleaches, rinses, and water temperatures for specific types of laundry.
  • Ability to provide instruction and guidance to patients or inmates assigned to the laundry and/or linen rooms.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
