Definition
Under direction, performs the routine tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of refrigerating equipment used in refrigerating plants and/or for conditioning air and cooling water in buildings; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Assists in installing and assembling condensers, compressors, motors, and other units of refrigerating equipment.
- Assembles and connects various pipes and ducts used in piping brine and conditioning air.
- Overhauls and repairs pumps, compressors, piping, and other equipment used in refrigerating and air conditioning systems.
- Cleans and lubricates equipment.
- Replaces needed parts.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a valid Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician Certification of the appropriate level, commensurate with the type of equipment serviced, issued under the authority of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform in essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices and of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in a refrigeration and air conditioning operation and in general maintenance work.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to follow safety precautions in performing the work. Ability to maintain and use equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to maintain simple records.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
