Definition

Under direction in a police department, performs work involving the development and implementation of crime prevention programs, activities and techniques for individuals, businesses, and community groups; does other related work as required.

Examples of work

• Develops and presents educational programs, presentations, and learning activities for community based organizations, neighborhood groups, schools, elderly and youth organizations, and other groups to promote citizen awareness of crime prevention activities in areas such as personal safety, burglary, child abuse, drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, and gang activity.
• Analyzes crime reporting data and records and collects information relating to the reduction and elimination of crime targets.
• Identifies crime patterns and provides appropriate safety tips.
• Conducts business and residential security surveys upon request from residents.
• Identifies security weaknesses and hazards and recommends hardware and security measures such as locking devices, alarms, and lighting.
• Provides residents with crime prevention techniques in order to prevent a crime from occurring.
• Prepares reports as required in the performance of assigned duties.
• Conducts a police information program for elementary school children.
• Eliminates or reduces factors that can lead to victimization.
• Develops brochures, posters, slides, and other informational materials.
• Makes presentations on police subjects in order to foster a better understanding of the role of the police in the community.
• Develops equipment and protocols to prevent crime.
• May supervise Crime Prevention Aides or other staff involved in program activities.
• Develops and distributes visual aids pertaining to community and police relations and crime prevention.
• Utilizes films and projectors as necessary in making class presentations and encourages participation from class members.
• Makes presentations before community organizations, public, and private agencies on crime prevention.
• Maintains essential records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited College or University with an Associate's Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Public Relations or Journalism.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of statistical measurement and the principles of statistical analyses.
• Knowledge of various types of residential, commercial, and industrial security systems.
• Knowledge of the impact of criminal activities on a community and the measure that can be taken to prevent such activities.
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system and how it relates to crime victims.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
• Ability to relate to business people, residents, and the community's need and deal effectively with problem related to crime prevention.
• Ability to perform the work involved in the dispensing of information of crime prevention to residents and businesses.
• Ability to identify commercial, industrial, and residential security weaknesses and to recommend appropriate corrective security measures.
• Ability to develop programs which involve and encourage citizen participation in crime prevention activities.
• Ability to develop and conduct educational and information programs concerning crime prevention and to give classroom presentations on such matters.
• Ability to speak before groups of people and to communicate effectively with various types of people.
• Ability to create public awareness of crime prevention matters through the preparation and dissemination of printed material.
• Ability to correlate statistical information and foresee problem areas.
• Ability to participate in community affairs.
• Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports when directed.
• Ability to maintain records and files.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
