Definition
Under the limited supervision of the Engineer-In-Charge of Maintenance or other supervisory officer in a state agency or institution, operates and repairs stationary steam and hot water boilers and auxiliary boiler equipment in a low pressure power or heating plant; performs basic work involved in varied types of building maintenance and repair tasks; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Periodically operates and inspects stationary boilers used to generate power to supply steam to turbines and other steam powered equipment and fuels boilers by regulating the flow of oil to oil burners.
- Tours the powerhouse to observe operating equipment, meters, and gauges, to ensure that equipment is operating according to instructions; starts, stops, adjusts, and regulates the equipment and regulates pump speed.
- Participates in the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and utility systems, including plumbing, masonry, carpentry, painting, electrical work, refrigeration, air conditioning, and sheet metal, mechanical, and automotive work.
- Manipulates valves to control the operation of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges and manipulates valves to bring reading within the specified requirements.
- Performs emergency repairs and the work needed to maintain the machines and equipment in good operating condition.
- Oils and greases moving machines.
- Replaces worn and defective parts on equipment.
- Conducts simple tests of boiler water to determine the amount of hardness, acidity and alkalinity and operates boiler water conditioning apparatus and equipment.
- Obtains stores, safeguards, and properly uses needed equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.
- Repairs and cleans boilers, locks, appliances, fixtures, machinery, circuits, and generators.
- Maintains records and files of results of systematic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, and draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- In the Department of Corrections, may be required to act as team leader and provide appropriate on-site work assignments to a group of assigned inmates.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in general maintenance repair work and work involving the operation of stationary steam boilers and auxiliary equipment of a power plant or low pressure heating plant.
License
Appointee must possess an Operating Engineers license (Blue Seal Minimum) of the appropriate level issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the varied types of boilers, engines, motor, and auxiliary equipment used in power and heating plants and their proper use, care, adjustment, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of the methods used to operate, maintain and perform minor repairs and adjustments to varied types of feed and vacuum pumps, generators and motors, feed conveyors, blowers and automatic stokers, buildings, grounds and utility systems, including plumbing, masonry, carpentry, painting, electrical work, refrigeration, air conditioning and sheet metal, mechanical and automotive work.
- Knowledge of the methods used to set governors.
- Knowledge of the methods used to conduct comprehensive tests and to record periodic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, steam flow, and other recording apparatus.
- Ability to analyze power and heating plant operation and maintenance problems and general buildings repair work.
- Ability to organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to work effectively with associates.
- Ability to operate, maintain, and perform minor and emergency repairs to varied types of boilers, engines, electrical generating equipment and other types of machinery and equipment used in power and heating plants and to buildings, grounds, and utility systems.
- Ability to inspect, check, make proper use of safety units and devices.
- Ability to lubricate and clean machinery and equipment and operate and maintain varied types of feed and vacuum pumps, generators and motors, feed conveyors, blowers, and automatic stokers.
- Ability to set varied types of governors and to record readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and use and recording of power plant equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to prepare reports and maintain records, reports, and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
