Definition
Under direction, plans, supervises, and has charge of the work of a unit of youth group workers; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Supervises a unit of youth group workers.
- Plans, organizes, and directs the implementation of individual and group activities to aide juveniles with behavioral problems.
- Directs and instructs youth group workers in procedures to follow in implementing individual and group activities.
- Conducts and directs staff meetings concerned with planning individual and group programs.
- Plans and organizes programs for juveniles to develop an improved sense of responsibility and duty toward themselves and society.
- Assigns work to accomplish goals and objectives.
- Prepares or directs the preparation of reports.
- Consults with other agencies and with parents concerning the juvenile's behavior.
- Maintains or directs the maintenance of records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Psychology or related field..
Experience
Four (4) years of experience in professional counseling and guidance or in teaching, social welfare, or medical social services, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of psychological and social problems of juveniles.
- Knowledge of social, economic, and psychological causes of deviant behavior.
- Knowledge of interview and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of government and private agencies that can offer help in rehabilitating juveniles.
- Knowledge of problems involved in dealing constructively with personality disorders, social behavior, and social relationships.
- Ability to plan rehabilitation programs.
- Ability to assign work.
- Ability to direct staff in their assignments.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
