Definition
Under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing, or other supervisory official, investigates, analyzes, and records nosocomial infections in a State hospital or long-term care facility, nursing home, developmental center, veterans home, or other State or local government facility or institution; assists in the development and implementation of improved infection control measures; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Coordinates and implements the infection control program in the institution.
- May plan and develop new policies/procedures for the infection control program.
- Conducts surveillance rounds to eliminate risks of infection to residents, patients, and personnel.
- Evaluates preventive and control procedures relating to the inanimate hospital environment including sterilization/disinfection practices, central service, housekeeping, laundry, food sanitation, waste management, etc.
- Makes daily rounds of nursing units for the purpose of case finding and the supervision of isolation techniques.
- Evaluates and maintains records of infections among residents, patients, and staff.
- Acts as the infection control liaison between all hospital departments and medical services, the infection control committee, and hospital administration.
- Provides consultation and assistance involving infection control issues, problems, or complaints.
- Maintains close communications with supervisory personnel concerning infection problems and epidemiological hazards.
- Monitors compliance with federal, state, and professional guidelines, rules, and regulations.
- Identifies areas which need special monitoring programs and initiates/maintains these programs so that infection hazards will be eradicated.
- Compiles clinical data and actively assists in research studies related to infection control.
- Reviews microbiological data daily and advises appropriate personnel regarding significant findings.
- Assists medical personnel in identifying carriers and tracing possible sources of infection.
- Develops and conducts education programs for hospital personnel to improve knowledge and practice of infection control and epidemiology.
- May train staff in infection prevention and control protocols.
- Prepares clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative reports on epidemiologic and infection matters containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Establishes and maintains records, reports, and files.
- Attends seminars, workshops, and educational programs related to infection control.
- Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in epidemiologic or infection detection and/or infection investigation and/or control work.
License
Registration as a professional nurse in the State of New Jersey.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

- Knowledge of the epidemiologic or infection detection/control methods.
- Knowledge of the epidemiological study procedures and their application.

- Knowledge of the virus diseases and virologic testing procedures.
- Ability to plan, develop, participate in, and conduct epidemiologic surveys and other studies.
- Ability to analyze data, prepare conclusions and make recommendations.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with associates, physicians, hospital administrators, pathologists, and patients.
- Ability to use epidemiological study procedures and statistical evaluation methods.
- Ability to prepare clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative statistical and other reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to establish and maintain essential records, reports, and files.
- Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
