Definition
Under the immediate supervision of a Landscape Crew Supervisor or other supervisory officer in a state department, institution or agency, performs varied landscape maintenance and construction work, including substituting for the Landscape Crew Supervisor, specialized pesticide work, shrub and tree planting and maintenance, grass maintenance and construction, soil maintenance; operates landscape and snow equipment; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Performs duties of commercial pesticide applicator as required by law to enable the continuation of the department's spraying program when Landscape Crew Supervisor's position is filled on a temporary basis by a non-certified first line supervisor.
- Performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks concerned with the pesticide and general landscape construction and maintenance work.
- Applies pesticides to combat all types of pests within the right of way.
- Instructs crew personnel in the proper handling, mixing, and application of pesticides.
- Trains or assists in training crew personnel on a daily basis by furnishing technical direction.
- Responsible for all pesticide applications made by non-certified crewmembers as required by the State of New Jersey pesticide control laws.
- Prepares detailed daily pesticide applications records for all operations under his direction.
- Confers with responsible individuals in matters of civil litigation, as required.
- As required, substitutes for Landscape Crew Supervisor for short periods of time until Landscape Crew Supervisor can be replaced by other first line supervisor.
- Attends Department of Environmental Protection and Energy authorized training programs on new pesticides, application techniques, safety and equipment.
- Transports, stores, mixes, and applies pesticide in the execution of assigned duties.
- Renovates or constructs turf areas.
- Transplants, cultivates, and fertilizes trees and shrubs as required.
- Trims, prunes, and removes trees and shrubs using acceptable horticultural practices consistent with existing policies.
- Performs emergency snow work as required.
- Performs emergency landscape such as tree damage caused by natural causes or accidents, which adversely affect the highway system.
- Identifies noxious plants and harmful insects and takes corrective action.
- Operates, maintains, makes minor repairs or adjustments to all types of landscape and snow equipment.
- Calibrates spraying and spreading equipment used in pesticide, snow, liming, fertilizing, and seeding work.
- Provides on-the-job training in general landscape work as well as the technical aspects of pesticide work.
- May be required to lean to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in the construction and maintenance of landscape areas, including the use of pesticides.
License
Appointee must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of all phases of pesticide work including transporting, storage, mixing, application, and personnel and environmental safety.
- Knowledge of the proper use, maintenance, and adjustment of landscape tools and equipment.
- Ability to calibrate spray equipment.
- Ability to communicate with the public in matters of pesticide application or routine landscape work.
- Ability to apply acceptable horticultural standards in daily work situations.
- Ability to receive and relay instruction to other crewmembers.
- Ability to take charge in care of pesticide spills and notify proper authorities.
- Ability to keep detailed records.
- Ability to operate, maintain, and make minor repairs to all types of landscape equipment.
- Ability to instruct and train Pesticide Operators and Maintenance Workers in all phases of landscape construction and maintenance work, with emphasis on pesticide applications.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.
Appointee will be required to obtain a Registered Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification issued by the Department of Environmental Protection and Energy, valid in New Jersey, within six (6) months of appointment. The inability of the employee to attain the certification and necessary endorsements within six (6) months of hire shall constitute grounds for removal.
