Definition

Under direction, conducts and supervises the conduct of laboratory tests and analysis to determine the quality, purity and other characteristics of water and/or wastewater to meet health standards and other requirements set by state and federal agencies; supervises the work of chemists and laboratory assists; does other related work.

Examples of work

  • Conducts and supervises the conduct of chemical and microbiological analysis and testing of potable and non potable water samples collected from various sources; determines substances and pollutants present.
  • Provides assignments and instructions to staff and supervises their performance.
  • Supervises the testing of water for organic and inorganic substances to determine chemical and physical properties.
  • Supervises the conduct of bacteriological testing and analysis.
  • Supervises the preparation of reagents and strains.
  • Supervises the conduct of physical tests and measurements to determine color, odor and turbidity.
  • Coordinates testing activities and projects with other agencies.
  • Evaluates and supervises the evaluation of test results.
  • Calibrates and standardizes laboratory equipment.
  • Compiles and interprets testing data.
  • Supervises the conduct of quality control procedures on equipment, reagents and tests.
  • Adapts standardized laboratory procedures, formulas and techniques.
  • Prepares laboratory reports.
  • Establishes and maintains records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in one of the biological sciences or chemistry, including or supplemented by three (3) semester hour credits in bacteriology.

Experience

Five (5) years of laboratory experience in chemical and/or bacteriological testing and analysis.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles of chemistry and microbiology.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to interpret and evaluate test results.
  • Knowledge of standard water microbiological and chemical reference manuals.
  • Knowledge of the techniques used to operate and calibrate instruments.
  • Knowledge of the chemical compounds and microorganisms found in water.
  • Ability to conduct and supervise the conduct of chemical and microbiological analysis and testing of potable and non potable water samples.
  • Ability to supervise the preparation of reagents and strains.
  • Ability to operate and calibrate testing equipment.
  • Ability to provide assignments and instructions to staff and supervise their work performance.
  • Ability to compile and interpret testing data and evaluate testing results.
  • Ability to adapt standardized laboratory procedures, formulas and techniques.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
