Definition
Under the immediate supervision of a Data Processing Librarian I in a Data Center or in a subordinate Computer Center, maintains the Data Center collection of magnetic media used for automatic data processing purposes; maintains control of subsidiary records; and routes tapes, disks, and data to appropriate areas within the Data Center; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Under immediate supervision, maintains the Data Center collection of magnetic tape reels, disk packs, and punched cards; maintains control of subsidiary records, routes tapes, disks, and data to appropriate areas within the Data Center.
- Prepares and maintains history records for each reel of magnetic tape in the collection indicating the number of times used on specific operations and the number of errors encountered on each pass; brings faulty reels to the attention of the supervisor.
- Maintains a log of reels and disks currently available for use; on a daily basis assigns appropriate media for production and test runs.
- Numbers, labels and sets up records for new media entering the library; makes the necessary entries for deletion of media from the collection in accord with unit specification.
- Conducts the retesting and cleaning of magnetic media and keeps records of media which have been retested.
- Maintains records pertaining to magnetic media used on specific recording/reading devices.
- Stores and maintains punched card data files.
- Assembles magnetic data necessary to process a computer operation, including routing such data to the staging area, and controlling its return to storage.
- Operates a teleprocessing terminal and uses teleprocessing software in the operation and maintenance of the magnetic media library.
- Keeps proper records of all Aread and write@ errors on specific tapes and other media.
- Makes arrangements for preparing and transporting magnetic media to and from off-site storage locations.
- Prepares necessary reports.
- Maintains essential records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) year of experience in a Data Center, one (1) of which shall have been in the storing, record control, cataloging, and routing of tapes, disks, or other magnetic and punched media.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Candidates will be tested on the hardware, software operating system, languages and/or other pertinent aspects of each installation and must show proficiency in the areas tested.
The eligible list from an examination will be used only for the Data Center specified.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of magnetic media retention cycles and of media maintenance, record keeping, and handling methods.
- Knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Data Center and their application to magnetic media libraries.
- Knowledge of procedures and equipment used in magnetic media library work.
- Knowledge of the procedures used in maintaining records.
- Knowledge of information processing production and control functions, practices, and workflow control techniques.
- Knowledge of the workings of electronic computers as related to magnetic media use.
- Ability to properly sequence the required input/output media to match production schedules.
- Ability to perform the duties of other magnetic data control personnel during periods of absences or emergencies.
- Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and concise reports and logs for the routing and control of magnetic media.
- Ability to maintain essential records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
