Definition
Either (a) under supervision of a Principal Engineer, Electrical in a state department, does routine field and office work involved in the survey, design, planning, construction and inspection of electrical distribution systems and lighting systems; or (b) under supervision of a Principal Engineer, Electrical or other supervisory official in the Department of Transportation, performs work involved in design, installation, maintenance, repair, and alteration of highway lighting; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Prepares and reviews plans and specifications for various types of electrical installation.
- Inspects project work to ensure compliance of installation with approved plans and specifications.
- Investigates electrical complaints and obtains data by field testing of electrical equipment, using various types of instruments such as ammeters, voltmeters, and wattmeters, makes calculations, and prepares comprehensive reports on findings.
- Makes field inspections of condition and functioning of existing electrical installations and equipment.
- Prepares and develops preventive maintenance programs for electrical equipment.
- Prepares and reviews cost estimates.
- Prepares and maintains records and files.
- Gathers field data including taking measurements of exact locations of physical features of the site of proposed electrical projects which may affect the design.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
Experience
One (1) year of full time experience in electrical engineering related work.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of principles, procedures, techniques, and application of electrical engineering and their application to specific situations.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with applied trigonometry and calculus.
- Knowledge of purposes, policies, procedures, and standards of the State concerned with electrical installations.
- Knowledge of electrical engineering problems involved in planning, design, construction, and maintenance of electrical systems.
- Knowledge of the character of State electrical installations.
- Knowledge of form, content and preparation of electrical construction plans, of techniques used in drafting and preparing detailed maps and charts, and of inspection techniques.
- Ability to organize assigned technical field and office electrical engineering work, analyze electrical engineering problems, and develop appropriate work methods.
- Ability to apply basic electrical engineering principles and techniques in plans, designs, charts, maps, specifications and estimates and to reduce and plot field notes.
- Ability to make preliminary physical inspections of work done by others.
- Ability to make inspections and investigations of electrical project work under construction or maintenance and to prepare reports.
- Ability to assist in preparation of realistic cost, personnel, time, and other estimates and reports.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
